The secret laughter of men

There is a popular saying that goes thus,

"if you have nothing good to say about someone,then don't say anything at all"

As much as we all tend to agree that gossiping is women's favourite pastime and can't  survive without it,saying men don't engage in it is pure cliche...in fact,it is more vicious in men than women...it is the secret laughter of men! 


"...The prick is a boy made good"

QT snorted indignantly,his friend Qamar added,

"Wasn't it just a few months back that he begged me to borrow my shoes to one of his gigs? It all seemed like yesterday"

QT shook his head sadly,chuckling in amusement mixed with wonder,

"The friggin son of a hoe was floating around the whole place like he owned it,having the nerve to greet me like a celeb greets his fans,like it wasn't just few months back he looked up to us in the street"

QT spits,sounding pained and his ego bruised. I kept waltzing back and forth around the sitting room,acting busy whilst picking up everything they said,QT continued,

"In my life,all I've ever strongly hated are ingrates,traitors,they peeve me beyond shit, how could bayo act so? A guy whom I gave handdown clothes? Ah! Nawao...that's human beings for you oo"


Qamar shrugged and suggested they go on twitter and tell all about his past and how he depended on his friends for hand down clothes,QT instantly shook his head declining to do that,

"That's just so childish,we shouldn't do that,leave the punk to enjoy his five minutes,it would all burn off and back to square one,trust me"


Bayo,the guy being gossiped was a friend to QT and his clique of friends who started as a stand-up comedian and now making waves after a popular nigerian comedian brushed him up and made him part of his inner circle,not only that,he recently got his first minor endorsement from a telecommunication company and QT and his friends felt betrayed that he shunned them at a recent event.

Soon after QT's friend left,we got dressed up to go into town to get fuel in the wake of the fuel scarcity in abuja and around the country,QT was behind the wheels,Karl at the passenger seat and I sitting at the owner's seat  felt it was the perfect time to bring up the gossiping topic,

"So Qatari,what you and your friend did earlier was unnecessary,why would you guys be gossiping viciously about your pal? Just because he's being able to get ahead in life,you guys are now hating?"

I stated as it seem to stir the hornet's nest in QT's mind,hitting the steering wheels furiously,he fired back defensively,

"What do you mean we were hating,just because he got some comedy gigs courtesy of his popular comedian boss and now climbing the echelon of career success and with one small endorsement under his belt,is that what gave him the effrontery to treat us the way he did? Treating us like low lives who came to beg for crumbs? I won't take it,not from him"


I smiled and responded,

"I believe in letting go and wishing a brother the best of luck,if a brother has been able to get out of a fold and made a name for himself,his buddies should be happy for him,not hating, peddling idle gossip and hating doesn't suit a guy"

QT turned back to look at me,looking highly crossed,told me calmly he wasn't gossiping,

"Men don't gossip,we were conversing real issues,what bayo did was terrible,I won't do that to my buddies,just because he has a little recognition now,he thinks he has arrived? This is one of the reasons so many people never achieve their dreams and aspirations in life because they couldn't handle fame and riches and God loves them so much to allow materialism ruin their chances at heaven"

As much as I sort of agreed with his argument,it didn't change the fact that what he and his friend Qamar were doing is gossiping and men do indulge in it.
